Many websites are going through the dilemma of not ranking well in the search engines. Fortunately, we have collected some common reasons why your site is not showing up in the search engine results. This will hopefully help you improve your website to gain more attention in the online community.
- Your homepage is a Flash Splash Screen – splash screen is an image that is used to describe the introduction page of a website. Your homepage is the most important part of your website; it should tell the people what your site is all about. Your homepage should not contain a splash screen with fancy animation that says “Enter Site” or “Flash Intro Page.” The search engine will index your website for “enter site” or “flash intro page” since those are the only words the search engine can pick up from your page. Title tags are very vital to locate your page. Get rid of the flash splash screen on your homepage and replace it with normal, corporate looking web design. It will not only improve your site rankings but it will make you look more professional.
- Your webpage has more pictures than words – words are worth than pictures. You must know that the search engine cannot read pictures so a picture is useless to determine what your site is all about. If you want your picture to be picked up by the search engine – write words describing that picture. But written content is more appropriate than visuals – though visuals are a good way to complement your text.
- No one is linking to your webpage – if your website is not linked to any other site, search engines will not even bother to visit your site. If you have any affiliations with other sites, you will be viewed as a real player in the industry, thus you will gain more popularity in the web visitors and search engines. Link to a site that is relevant to your content.
When you design your website, ask yourself if what the website is all about. When someone searches for a particular topic, make sure that your content has those keywords – it is important that the keywords appear on your page so it will be recognized by the search engine right away. Make sure that those keywords will appear in text and not in images to make it more effective. Gather links pointing to your website.
